I often feel a little cowardly when browsing the scotch section at the local liquor store, and quickly shuffle past the Islay section. Everything about whisky from Islay can seem daunting. The billows of smoke, the oil slick iodine, the gold plated price tags. Getting into Islay feels like getting into an exclusive club, where there is a splash of hazing prior to full membership. One Islay which delivers the full peated experience, but at a slightly gentler flavour and price point is Laphroaig’s Quarter Cask. Battled at 96 proof …
The Dalmore distillery, founded in 1839 in a secluded area west of Invergordon just across the Cromarty Firth from Balblair, is know under the ownership of Whyte and Mackay. Owned by the Mackenzies for a century, the bottle still bears a stag’s head — a key element of the family’s coat of arms. Dalmore is known for their use of sherry casks; as such, whisky connoisseurs who enjoy The Macallan 12 Year or Macallan Fine Oak 10 Year are sure to appreciate the rich flavours from the Dalmore’s offerings.

Tullibardine, founded 5 years after the second world war, sits on the site of a 15th century brewery which once supplied beer for King James IV. Located in Blackford, the home of Highland Springs mineral water, the distillery switched ownership multiple times before being mothballed by Whyte and Mackay in the mid ’90s. The whisky we review now is the 1993 vintage — some of …
Following up on our review of Highwood Distiller’s Centennial 10 year old rye, we now turn to its albino twin — White Owl Whisky. While both products are a 60/40 blend of wheat and rye, the Centennial is aged a minimum of 10 years, due to its age statement, whereas the White Owl is mostly 10 year old whisky, but a minimum of 8 years. The White Owl blend is then ran through triple filtration to remove color and impurities, leaving you with, yes, a clear whisky. At first …
Highwood Distillers was founded in 1974 in High River, Alberta, and the distillery remains there to this day. Having purchased Potters in 2005 (as we mentioned in our review of the Century Reserve Lot 1525) Highwood has become the largest (the only, actually) independently-owned distillery in Alberta. Alongside a range of vodkas, rums, and other spirits, Highwood makes several whiskies under the Highwood and Potters names. One of the whiskies produced is this Centennial canadian rye, aged a minimum 10 years. Here are our thoughts:
Like the Century Reserve 15 Years …
