A night at Shebeen

shebeen1One of Vancouver’s gems for whisky lovers is Shebeen Whisk(e)y House.  Nestled behind Gastown’s Irish heather, the menu contains the largest selection of whiskies I have ever set my eyes on.  You can actually see the list (at least most of it) here.  What an amazing selection of malts.  Despite wandering in last night around 10 or 10:30 in the evening, we managed to try out 6 different malts.  Auchentoshan 12, Jura Superstition, Highland Park 12, Finlaggan Old Reserve, GlenDronach Sherry Cask 12, and Longmore 16.  All in all it was a memorable evening.  We even managed to find a few that the women in our group enjoyed immensely (guess which ones?).  The staff there were wonderful, and as our evening wound down, we had a good chat with the bartender, who gladly showed us the bottles from the drams we had and talked a while about favourites, not-so-favourites, and more, even letting us compare the nose of some of our favourites with his recommendations.  With great food, whisk(e)y selection, and an amazingly knowledgeable and friendly staff, I’ll be back soon.  Any bar with “lady-friendly” whiskies on the menu is worth a return visit.
